Information: Randy was born and raised in Colorado and received his Bachelor's degree in biology from the Colorado College in 1987. He received his Ph.D. from UC Santa Barbara in 1992, where he studied the physiology of deep-sea hydrothermal vent animals. He received a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), where he studied the physiology of cold seep organisms in Monterey Bay. Randy completed his MBARI Postdoctoral research in 1995 and accepted a Research Scientist position at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where he was involved in exhibit development, electronic outreach, print publishing and media relations. In 2007 he joined the interactive agency ad2, where he served as a communications consultant to a variety of corporations, museums and research institutions. In 2009 Randy became science communications officer for the Block Lab at Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station. There he oversees media relations, interactive media development, and public education and outreach activities, as well as providing project management and fund raising support. It is in this role that Randy began collaborating with staff at EDC, initially on the “Ocean Tracks” project, and later on the CODAP and Ocean Tracks: College Edition projects, in which he is currently engaged.
